Before approaching potential industry partners for this project, it is critical that the level of need for this initiative be determined. It will be worthwhile to know what tools or resources were offered to students in high school, as well as the extent to which they were helpful. It will also be valuable to learn whether or not students feel they are getting enough information about potential careers today, through what kind of tools or resources, and the extent to which they are helpful.
In terms of career paths, it will be useful to learn what percentage of students have settled on a desired career and, if so, at what point (generally) that decision was made. We will also rank the characteristics of a job (e.g. salary, work-life balance, job security, etc.) that are most to least important to them.
In addition, while is it difficult to accurately "bucket" industry sectors, we will broadly identify student's level of familiarity with jobs in the following 6 sectors: Skilled Trades, Health Care, Hospitality Services, Information Technology, Engineering, and Construction.
Finally, the all-important question: this survey will ask if there is interest in having access to a digital repository of hundreds of brief interviews with people who love their jobs, sorted by sector. To those interested, we will ask about their the preferred delivery method (e.g. website, podcast, etc.), their preference for audio, video, or both formats, as well as their opinion on when the resource should begin to be offered (e.g. elementary school, high school, etc.).
I am eager to review the results of this needs assessment, which will available in late-April.
