I recently asked about 55 undergraduate college students to write down the first word that came to mind when hearing the word, "Instagram." Since I don't use Instagram, I was particularly interested in the results. I predicted that "pictures" or "photos" as well as "selfie" would be common associations, but I underestimated the popularity of "hashtag." At least on the surface, this suggests that the naming and cataloging of life experiences is just as top-of-mind as capturing them on camera.
